Mendonça,A.H.; Cerqueira,M.M.O.P.; Nicoli,J.R.; Sousa,S.M.M.; Nardi,R.M.D.; Souza,F.N.; Fonseca,L.M.; Leite,M.O.; Arantes,R.M.E..
The ability of a Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain isolated from a healthy breast-fed human newborn to reduce the pathological consequences for the host due to an experimental oral infection with Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serov. Typhimurium in vivo was determined using gnotobiotic and conventional mice. Conventional mice received 0.1mL probiotic milk (8.0 log colony-forming unit) daily for 10 days before the oral pathogenic challenge (5.0 log colony-forming unit). Then probiotic treatment was continued until the end of the experiment. Probiotic treatment in germ-free mice consisted of a single dose of the probiotic milk at the beginning of the experiment and a challenge with S. Typhimurium 10 days later (3.0 log colony-forming unit). A protective...

A Limit for Antler Length in Captive Marals International Journal of Morphology
Korzhikenova,N; Sambetbaev,A; Iglikov,O; Parés-Casanova,P. M.
The main aim of this study was to estimate phenotypic correlations among live weight, withers height, rump height, chest depth, chest width, thoracic girth, body length, hip widths (between iliac tuberosities and between ischial tuberosities) and forelimb cannon perimeter with antler length measured during the growth of marals on a Kazakh farm. The data comprised 18 animals studied during their growth (at 18 months and at 24 months). In maral, the first period of antler productivity takes place at the age of 24 months. This fact should be taken into account in order to select the best animals for antler production, which is the main purpose for farming this species.

A Linear Programming for Sugarcane Cultivation and Harvest Planning with Cane Survival Rate CIGR Journal
SUPSOMBOON, SRISAWAT; NIEMSAKUL, JIRAWAN.
In Thailand, sugarcane mills have faced supply and demand imbalance problems. Solving such problems is complicated due to various substantial factors. Sugarcane cultivation and harvest are important processes since they are the early stages of the sugarcane industry. Cultivation and harvest planning can be designed by using optimization model in order to balance supply and demand. This paper proposes a linear optimization model used in sugarcane cultivation and harvest planning with multiple suppliers. Sugarcane survival rate is one of the important factors considered in the presented model. A case study of the large-size sugarcane mills in Thailand was investigated. Many other significant factors were considered such as cultivating land size, sugarcane...

A Linnaeus NGTM interactive key to the Lithocolletinae of North-West Europe aimed at accelerating the accumulation of reliable biodiversity data (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae) Naturalis
Doorenweerd, C.; Haren, M.M. van; Schermer, M.; Pieterse, S.; Nieukerken, E.J. van.
We present an interactive key that is available online through any web browser without the need to install any additional software, making it an easily accessible tool for the larger public. The key can be found at http://identify.naturalis.nl/lithocolletinae. The key includes all 86 North-West European Lithocolletinae, a subfamily of smaller moths (“micro-moths”) that is commonly not treated in field guides. The user can input data on several external morphological character systems in addition to distribution, host plant and even characteristics of the larval feeding traces to reach an identification. We expect that this will enable more people to contribute with reliable observation data on this group of moths and alleviate the work-load of taxonomic...

A mathematic model for the interaction between Meloidogyne spp. and Pasteuria penetrans Rev. Protección Veg.
Miranda,Ileana; Gómez,Lucila; Benítez,Hugo L.; Castillo,Yoannia; Hernández-Ochandía,Dainé; Rodríguez,Mayra G..
Some aspects of Meloidogyne spp. (root-knot nematode) growth regulation by the gram-negative bacterium Pasteuria penetrans were reviewed. The study allowed the construction of a mathematical model to predict the dynamics of both organisms. The model includes 11 differential equations and 31biological constants describing the life-cycle of the nematode and its relationship with the bacterium. To simulate the real behavior of the populations, the constants, which represent biological parameters, have to be evaluated under controlled conditions similar to those of soil microcosm.

A mean-field Babcock-Leighton solar dynamo model with long-term variability Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANCHEZ,SABRINA; FOURNIER,ALEXANDRE; PINHEIRO,KATIA J.; AUBERT,JULIEN.
Dynamo models relying on the Babcock-Leighton mechanism are successful in reproducing most of the solar magnetic field dynamical characteristics. However, considering that such models operate only above a lower magnetic field threshold, they do not provide an appropriate magnetic field regeneration process characterizing a self-sustainable dynamo. In this work we consider the existence of an additional α-effect to the Babcock-Leighton scenario in a mean-field axisymmetric kinematic numerical model. Both poloidal field regeneration mechanisms are treated with two different strength-limiting factors. Apart from the solar antisymmetric parity behavior, the main solar features are reproduced: cyclic polarity reversals, mid-latitudinal equatorward migration of...

A meta-analysis of probiotics for preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm neonates BJMBR
Yang,Y.; Guo,Y.; Kan,Q.; Zhou,X.G.; Zhou,X.Y.; Li,Y..
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most common acquired diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in preterm infants. Some randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) have indicated that probiotics may potentially lower the incidence of NEC and mortality. However, debate still remains about the safety of probiotics and their influence on normal infant growth. We performed this meta-analysis to assess the safety and benefits of probiotic supplementation in preterm infants. We searched in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases for English references, and in Wanfang, VIP, and CNKI databases for Chinese references. Ultimately, 27 RCTs (including 9 Chinese articles) were incorporated into this meta-analysis. Relative risk (RR) and weighted mean difference...

A method to estimate the biomass of Spirulina platensis cultivated on a solid medium BJM
Pelizer,Lúcia Helena; Moraes,Iracema de Oliveira.
This paper presents a method to estimate the biomass of Spirulina cultivated on solid medium with sugarcane bagasse as a support, in view of the difficulty in determining biomass concentrations in bioprocesses, particularly those conducted in semi-solid or solid media. The genus Spirulina of the family Oscillatoriaceae comprises the group of multicellular filamentous cyanobacteria (blue-green microalgae). Spirulina is used as fish feed in aquaculture, as a food supplement, a source of vitamins, pigments, antioxidants and fatty acids. Therefore, its growth parameters are extremely important in studies of the development and optimization of bioprocesses. For studies of biomass growth, Spirulina platensis was cultured on solid medium using sugarcane bagasse...

A methodology for the sustainability assessment of agri-food systems: an application to the Slow Food Presidia project. Ecology and Society
Peano, Cristiana; Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie, Forestali e Alimentari (DISAFA), University of Turin, Italy; cristiana.peano@unito.it; Migliorini, Paola; University of Gastronomic Sciences, Pollenzo, Italy; p.migliorini@unisg.it; Sottile, Francesco; Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie e Forestali, University of Palermo, Italy; francesco.sottile@unipa.it.
New and alternative models for agri-food production and consumption have brought up questions regarding the effects they have on local development processes in terms of the economic exploitation of rural areas as well as environmental, cultural, and social factors. The agri-food system proposed by the Slow Food (SF) Presidia Project, which focuses on farm-to-market systems for local, high-quality, sustainable products, can respond to the new and emerging needs of both rural and urban populaces via several approaches in addition to food production itself. However, evaluating these parameters is challenging. The aim of this study was to develop an indicator-based tool to monitor the sustainability in agri-food systems that considers quality as well as...

A Michaelis–Menten type equation for describing methylmercury dependence on inorganic mercury in aquatic sediments ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Garnier, Cedric; Buscail, Roselyne; Elbaz-poulichet, Francoise; Mikac, Nevenka; Patel-sorrentino, Nathalie; Tessier, Erwan; Rigaud, Sylvain; Lenoble, Veronique; Gobeil, Charles.
Methylation of mercury (Hg) is the crucial process that controls Hg biomagnification along the aquatic food chains. Aquatic sediments are of particular interest because they constitute an essential reservoir where inorganic divalent Hg (HgII) is methylated. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in sediments mainly result from the balance between methylation and demethylation reactions, two opposite natural processes primarily mediated by aquatic microorganisms. Thus, Hg availability and the activity of methylating microbial communities control the MeHg abundance in sediments. Consistently, some studies have reported a significant positive correlation between MeHg and HgII or total Hg (HgT), taken as a proxy for HgII, in aquatic sediments using...

A Microarray-Based Analysis of Gametogenesis in Two Portuguese Populations of the European Clam Ruditapes decussatus ArchiMer
Sousa, Joana; Milan, Massimo; Bargelloni, Luca; Pauletto, Marianna; Matias, Domitilia; Joaquim, Sandra; Matias, Ana Margarete; Quillien, Virgile; Leitao, Alexandra; Huvet, Arnaud.
The European clam, Ruditapes decussatus is a species with a high commercial importance in Portugal and other Southern European countries. Its production is almost exclusively based on natural recruitment, which is subject to high annual fluctuations. Increased knowledge of the natural reproductive cycle of R. decussatus and its molecular mechanisms would be particularly important in providing new highly valuable genomic information for better understanding the regulation of reproduction in this economically important aquaculture species. In this study, the transcriptomic bases of R. decussatus reproduction have been analysed using a custom oligonucleotide microarray representing 51,678 assembled contigs. Microarray analyses were performed in four gonadal...

A microbiological and biogeochemical investigation of the cold seep tubeworm Escarpia southwardae (Annelida: Siboglinidae): Symbiosis and trace element composition of the tube ArchiMer
Duperron, Sebastien; Gaudron, Sylvie M.; Lemaitre, Nolwenn; Bayon, Germain.
Tubeworms within the annelid family Siboglinidae rely on sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic bacterial symbionts for their nutrition, and are among the dominant metazoans occurring at deep-sea hydrocarbon seeps. Contrary to their relatives from hydrothermal vents, sulfide uptake for symbionts occurs within the anoxic subsurface sediment, in the posterior ‘root’ region of the animal. This study reports on an integrated microbiological and geochemical investigation of the cold seep tubeworm Escarpia southwardae collected at the Regab pockmark (Gulf of Guinea). Our aim was to further constrain the links between the animal and its symbiotic bacteria, and their environment. We show that E. southwardae harbors abundant sulfur-oxidizing bacterial symbionts in its...

We examined how social-ecological factors in the land-change decision-making process influenced neighboring decisions and trajectories of alternative landscape ecologies. We decomposed individual landowner decisions to conserve or develop forests in the rapidly growing Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S. region, exposing and quantifying the effects of forest quality, and social and cultural dynamics. We tested the hypothesis that the intrinsic value of forest resources, e.g., cultural attachment to land, influence woodland owners’ propensity to sell. Data were collected from a sample of urban, nonindustrial private forest (U-NIPF) owners using an individualized survey design that spatially matched land-owner responses to the ecological and timber...

A Model Analysis for the Design and Deployment of an Eulerian Sediment Trap Mooring Array in a Western Boundary Upwelling System from Southeast Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MENDOZA,URSULA; CANDELLA,ROGÉRIO N.; ASSAD,LUIZ P.F.; CASTILLO,FEDERICO V.; AZEVEDO,LAURA; KNOPPERS,BASTIAAN A.; ALBUQUERQUE,ANA LUIZA S..
This work addresses the design and configuration of a Eulerian sediment trap mooring array, which was deployed at the shelf edge (zm ≈ 140 m) 80 km off Cabo Frio, SE- Brazil (23° S). The site was subject to interplay between the Tropical Waters (TW) of the Brazil Current (BC), intrusions from the South Atlantic Central Waters (SACW), which are the source of upwelling in the region, and other oceanographic processes. Detailed computations were used to optimize the total weight, buoyancy balance, and maximum acceptable tilt to avoid hydrodynamic bias in the trapping efficiency and array adaptation to the local oceanographic conditions with the assistance of Matlab and Muringa programs and Modular Ocean Model 4.0 (MOM; i.e., to assert the vertical...
